We would like ya'll to be thinking about what you want to learn or teach for next year. I would like to learn how to do nice even crosshatching and other Heirloom quilting techniques. How about you? January 10, 2009 Minutes
In the absence of our Presidents Deonn Stott and Janet Carpenter Wren Woodland hosted our meeting.
We discussed the January issue of “The American Quilter” magazine. It contained detailed, step by step instructions and pattern for trapunto quilting.
In the Fons and Porter July/August issue there was an article about batting that may be of value to us.
There are CDs available with designs from Quilt Maker. Wren saw them offered in her connecting Threads catalog.
Unlimited Possibilities magazine has had two issues with detailed articles about batting. They are the November and December issues.
Many of the ladies had poor results from using Mountain Mist batting. It tears easily. We were reminded that it is time to pay our sales tax. Many of our counties have a new tax rate.
The challenge quilt this year will be from Quilting Treasures web site. It is the Ellie Fun collection by Karen Neuburger. Click here to view the fabric. After looking at the fabric, each member can present any design ideas in February meeting.
The theme for the Challenge Quilt (and HMQS show) is Pump up the Color. The money from the quilt auction will go to digging a well in Kenya. Leslie will have the kits finished by next meeting.
New legislation we may need to learn about: Children’s products (12 and under) have to be tested for lead if you sell it.
Sew and Tell:
Kathy U’ren brought the quilt she wanted help with last time. She quilted it with pebble stippling around each doll motif. Cute!
Leslie Randle brought a quilt that is a variation to the yellow brick road pattern. It was quilted with a rambling leaf design. Fun!
Dolores Despain showed us the quilts she and her husband received as Christmas gifts from her daughter. What a great pay off from teaching your daughter a skill!
Lorri Overson brought a customer’s quilt to show. It was a nice log cabin she made more beautiful with her quilting.
Batting Discussion
Natalia Bonner:
Her favorite batting is Quilter’s Dream. She talked to us about the new Dream Green batting. It is made form recycled plastic bottles. It uses less energy to create and benefits the planet. Dream Angel is batting that is flame retardant. Natalia brought a handout with various types of batting described. She also brought beautiful quilts to show examples of various battings in a finished product. Thank you so much for this information. This line of batting can be purchased from her web site http://www.piecenquilt.com/ in February.
Natalia also hosts our blog and does a great job. She is willing to put information on the site for us. Please let her know about what you would like to see on the blog. It is http://www.longarmqts.blogspot.com/ Go there and enjoy!
Luanne Farr:
Luanne is from Winline Textiles in Ogden. She talked to us mainly about bamboo batting. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet. Some grows as much as a meter a day. It requires no irrigation or fertilization. Bamboo houses withstand earth quakes because it is very strong and flexible. Bamboo batting is bacteria resistant, breathable and takes dyes well. The shrinkage is similar to cotton/poly blend with 2 to 3 percent. The bamboo comes from the Orient and is manufactured in Texas. There is also a cotton/bamboo blend available. The cost is about $25 for a queen size batting. The sample we all got to feel was very soft and not stiff. Luanne showed us soy batting as well. It has similar characteristics to bamboo. It is also bacteria resistant and is soft. It seemed thinner than other batting. Following is a link for further
information about bamboo products. www.swicofil.com/products/015bamboo.html
Luanne also sold some batting to those interested.

Little Brynlee is Carol Poulson's daughter. Carol is a member of our Long arm quilt guild. If you are in a position to help, please do. Thank you so much.
Dear Family and Friends,
I'm forwarding this on to you because I know you'll want to help in any way you can. Most of us know someone fighting cancer and when it's a child fighting for her life, it tugs at our heartstrings and we say to ourselves, "I wish I could help". With this e-mail comes a chance to help little Brynlee Card.
Two year old Brynlee was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma in August 2008. She immediately began the fight for her life with long stays and chemo therapy at Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City. Brynlee is winning her fight to live and the prognosis is good. (See her blog at http://mygranddaughter.wordpress.com .) However, even with insurance, the out of pocket expenses are overwhelming and threaten the future of this family. Brynlee is the 6th of seven children; her parents are at a loss to cover these expenses and they need our help.
Here are two ways we can help right now:
Forward this e-mail to all of your friends and family to let them know Brynlee's family needs our help.
Donate at least $10 to the "Brynlee Card Cancer Treatment Fund" by clicking the "Donate" link below.
If you can give more, it will help more but if everyone can give a little it will mean a whole lot to a little girl fighting for her life and to her parents fighting to pay for the treatments that saved her.
Thanks for your help, Brynlee's Grandmother, Carol Poulson

P.S. Even if you're not in a position to help with a monetary donation, please forward this e-mail to your family and friends and give them the opportunity to help.

Business:
Janet Carpenter mentioned that our guild should be a chapter of the Utah Valley Quilting Guild. That will gives us free advertizing in the “Beeline” twice a year. It is free to apply. We need to have a president (of which we have two!), at least two other members and have a chapter name. The names we voted on were: Longarm Lassies, Longarm Ladies, Valley Gals, Longarm Q Ts. Longarm Q Ts became the winner. So our Chapter title is Longarm Q Ts. It was also suggested that we should have a web site. Natalia Bonner said that she would begin a blog site for us. Liza Anne Hall said that she would develop a web site for us. Myrl will apply on line to become a chapter.

Our Co-president talked about her 40 years of quilting experience. She has many things that she could teach us. There are many in our guild that could teach us as well. Janet passed out a survey to find the interests of the members. There are many possibilities for our guild meetings. Teachers outside our group can be invited to come and teach a concept. Our members could take classes and then teach us. The survey should help us make a calendar for the coming year.
Survey discussion:
1. Applipiecing is piecing with curves without much applique.
1. Applipiecing is piecing with curves without much applique.
2. There are always new methods.
3. Coming up in January we will be talking about batting. “Unlimited Possibilities” magazine had a great article about batting. Members of the guild are encouraged to bring with them to the January meeting samples of batting, quilted or unquilted. Batting types include bamboo, wool, recycled plastic etc.
4. Cathy U’Ren has an easier double wedding ring method. She wants to teach us and have us make samples for her book and give her suggestions about how to effectively teach her method. We will be doing this in February.
5. For March meeting we will be learning about making white or light whole-cloth quits. (Janet mentioned that fleece or felt may be used to “color” trapunto quilts.) We could ask Carol Liffereth if she can teach her method in March.
“Sew and Tell”
1. Cindy U’Ren: Using the John Flynn method Cindy showed us the diagonal seam on quilt backs formaximum fabric usage. The formulas is as follows: LF=length of the fabric. LQ=length of the quilt.WF=width of fabric and WQ=width of the quilt.LQ + LQ(WQ-WF) Attached is the explanation from his web site.2WF-WQ

2. Carol Poulson showed a dresdin plate Christmas Wreath wall hanging and a beautiful flying geese fall quilt. She used the Eleanore Burns method for both.
3. Kayedawn Epps Showed her Moda Christmas panel wall hanging. She also showed a beautiful baby quilt entitled “Lullaby” with machine applique.
4. Dolores Despain showed us her cute retreat quilt with Fabulous 40's fabric.
5. Janet Carpenter brought a quilt and pillow sham she made for her grandson featuring Star Wars. It was embellished with feather-flames. Fun! She also showed us a beautiful yellow flower quilt. She told us to get more even feathers it is best to start at the bottom of the feather on both sides.
Thanks, ladies, it was really inspiring to see what you can do.
Challenge Quilt for HMQS: The kits will be ready by January.
Cindy U’Ren asked for help with a “doll card” quilt she had pieced. There were many ideas to help her get inspired.
