More Batting Info

Since our last meeting I recieved an e-mail from Quilters Dream. They are going to be selling a Bamboo batting in the near future. I thought this was really interesting and wanted to share with all of you.

In the absence of our Presidents Deonn Stott and Janet Carpenter Wren Woodland hosted our meeting.

We discussed the January issue of “The American Quilter” magazine. It contained detailed, step by step instructions and pattern for trapunto quilting.
In the Fons and Porter July/August issue there was an article about batting that may be of value to us.
There are CDs available with designs from Quilt Maker. Wren saw them offered in her connecting Threads catalog.
Unlimited Possibilities magazine has had two issues with detailed articles about batting. They are the November and December issues.
Many of the ladies had poor results from using Mountain Mist batting. It tears easily. We were reminded that it is time to pay our sales tax. Many of our counties have a new tax rate.

The challenge quilt this year will be from Quilting Treasures web site. It is the Ellie Fun collection by Karen Neuburger. Click here to view the fabric.After looking at the fabric, each member can present any design ideas in February meeting.
The theme for the Challenge Quilt (and HMQS show) is Pump up the Color. The money from the quilt auction will go to digging a well in Kenya. Leslie will have the kits finished by next meeting.

New legislation we may need to learn about: Children’s products (12 and under) have to be tested for lead if you sell it.

Sew and Tell:
Kathy U’ren brought the quilt she wanted help with last time. She quilted it with pebble stippling around each doll motif. Cute!
Leslie Randle brought a quilt that is a variation to the yellow brick road pattern. It was quilted with a rambling leaf design. Fun!
Dolores Despain showed us the quilts she and her husband received as Christmas gifts from her daughter. What a great pay off from teaching your daughter a skill!
Lorri Overson brought a customer’s quilt to show. It was a nice log cabin she made more beautiful with her quilting.

Batting Discussion
Natalia Bonner:
Her favorite batting is Quilter’s Dream. She talked to us about the new Dream Green batting. It is made form recycled plastic bottles. It uses less energy to create and benefits the planet. Dream Angel is batting that is flame retardant. Natalia brought a handout with various types of batting described. She also brought beautiful quilts to show examples of various battings in a finished product. Thank you so much for this information. Luanne Farr:
Luanne is from Winline Textiles in Ogden. She talked to us mainly about bamboo batting. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet. Some grows as much as a meter a day. It requires no irrigation or fertilization. Bamboo houses withstand earth quakes because it is very strong and flexible. Bamboo batting is bacteria resistant, breathable and takes dyes well. The shrinkage is similar to cotton/poly blend with 2 to 3 percent. The bamboo comes from the Orient and is manufactured in Texas. There is also a cotton/bamboo blend available. The cost is about $25 for a queen size batting. The sample we all got to feel was very soft and not stiff. Luanne showed us soy batting as well. It has similar characteristics to bamboo. It is also bacteria resistant and is soft. It seemed thinner than other batting. Following is a link for further
